The Blockchain Maturity Model

Organizations around the world are beginning to acquire blockchain solutions. The problem is that they do not have the knowledge or framework to distinguish between a reliable solution and a hyped prototype.

The Blockchain Maturity Model helps solution providers demonstrate their credibility to potential customers and investors, and provides a roadmap for continuous improvement. Governments, enterprises and investors use the BMM to perform due diligence.

Structure
Core requirements

A common set of solution elements every blockchain solution should meet, organised into functional maturity levels.

Domain-specific requirements

Additional requirements that apply to the sector the solution serves — health, finance, identity, voting and others.

Family of standards

Supporting standards and supplements maintained by the Standards & Certification Working Group.

Why it carries weight

A registered certification mark

The BMM is a Registered Certification Mark with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Used in procurement

A Riverside County, California RFP included BMM rating status as a selection factor, and leaders in Mexico are exploring BMM-based evaluation for land records and identity systems.

Adopted for acquisition training

In 2026 GBA joined forces with the IT Acquisition Advisory Council (IT-AAC), a U.S. government body evaluating and deploying emerging technologies, and will train IT-AAC on the BMM for acquisitions.

Recognised internationally

The Dynamic Coalition on Blockchain Assurance & Standardization, recognised by the United Nations Internet Governance Forum, advances the BMM and its family of standards.

Who uses it
Solution providers

Demonstrate credibility to buyers and investors, get published in the Web3 Emerging Technology Directory, and follow a clear roadmap for improvement.

Governments and enterprises

Perform due diligence with an independent benchmark for security, performance, governance and transparency rather than vendor claims.

Investors

Distinguish a production-ready solution from a prototype before committing capital.
